Minimum Wage Calculator

Annual and monthly earnings at a minimum wage, including the tipped case where a lower cash wage is topped up by tips. If tips fall short, the employer has to make up the difference.

Also called: minimum wage annual salary, tipped minimum wage.

An estimate, not an offer or a guarantee. Projected returns assume the rate you entered holds for the whole term, which no market does.

Method and background

This is what the calculation gives for the numbers you entered. It is an estimate, not advice, and it knows nothing about your situation beyond those numbers. Rules for United States change on a published schedule; the effective date is shown on every rule-based tool.

How this is calculated

The arithmetic is a multiplication; what makes the page worth having is the tipped case. An employer may pay a lower cash wage and claim a tip credit for the difference, but only if tips actually bring the worker to the full minimum. When they do not, the employer owes the shortfall. The tips needed each week to reach the minimum is shown for exactly that reason.

annual = hourly rate * hours a week * weeks a year
w
Hourly minimum (currency)
h
Hours per week (hours)
k
Weeks per year (weeks)

Method and limits

What it assumes

  • The same hours every week, with no overtime.

What it deliberately does not model

  • Minimum wages vary by state, city and sometimes employer size, and several are indexed annually. Enter the one that applies.
  • Youth, training and small-employer sub-minimums are not modelled.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if my tips do not reach the minimum?
The employer must make up the difference. A tip credit is only valid to the extent tips actually close the gap between the cash wage and the full minimum.
