Tax Bracket Calculator

Which bracket a given taxable income falls in, how much of the income is actually taxed at that rate, and how far the next bracket is. Being in a bracket says almost nothing about what you pay.

Also called: which tax bracket am i in, income tax slab calculator.

You are in the 22% bracket, which starts at $50,400.00. Only the $34,600.00 above that is taxed at 22%. Your effective rate across all income is 15.78%.

Computed from the published rates for the tax year you selected, which is not necessarily the current year. A calculation, not tax advice, and it does not know anything about your circumstances beyond the figures entered.

Method and background

This is what the calculation gives for the numbers you entered. It is an estimate, not advice, and it knows nothing about your situation beyond those numbers. Rules for United States change on a published schedule; the effective date is shown on every rule-based tool.

How this is calculated

Bracket membership is decided by the top dollar, not by the whole income. This finds the band your last dollar sits in, then shows how little of your income is taxed there and how much room is left before the rate steps up again.

tax = sum over bands of rate * (income inside that band)

Written about this

  • A raise cannot leave you worse off · 1 min · Crossing into a higher tax bracket taxes the next dollar more, not every dollar. On a $1,000 raise at the 22% to 24% boundary you keep $762.

Method and limits

What it assumes

  • The figure entered is taxable income, after deductions rather than before.

What it deliberately does not model

  • Ordinary income brackets only.

Frequently asked questions

Is taxable income the same as salary?
No. Taxable income is what is left after the standard or itemised deduction and any above-the-line adjustments. Entering gross salary here will overstate the bracket.
