Swim Pace Calculator

Swim pace per 100 metres. A short course pool flatters times because each turn gives a push off the wall, so short and long course results are not comparable.

Also called: swimming pace calculator, per 100m pace.

1:54 per 100 m per 100 m, 1:44 per 100 y per 100 yards, at 0.88 m/s. That is 60 lengths of a 25 m pool at 0:28 each. A shorter pool means more turns and more push off the wall, so short course times are faster for the same swimming.

Method and background

This is what the calculation gives for the numbers you entered. It is an estimate, not advice, and it knows nothing about your situation beyond those numbers. Rules for United States change on a published schedule; the effective date is shown on every rule-based tool.

How this is calculated

Time divided by distance, expressed per hundred metres. Pool length matters more than in running: every turn provides a push off the wall, so a 25 metre pool has twice the turns of a 50 metre one and produces faster times for the same swimming. Competitive results are reported separately for short and long course for exactly this reason.

Method and limits

What it assumes

  • A constant pace with no rest.

What it deliberately does not model

  • Open water has no walls and no lane lines, so pool pace does not transfer directly.

Frequently asked questions

Why are my times faster in a 25 m pool?
Twice as many turns, and each one gives a push off the wall. Short course and long course times are reported separately because they are not comparable.
