How this is calculated

Add the retirement age in years to the date of birth. Many employers set the date as the last day of the month in which you turn the age rather than the birthday itself, so check your terms. The working-day count excludes weekends and is usually a much smaller and more concrete number than the years, which is the point of showing it.

retirement date = date of birth plus the retirement age in years

Method and limits

What it assumes

  • Retirement on the birthday itself, and a five-day working week.

What it deliberately does not model

  • Public holidays and leave are not deducted from the working-day count.
  • Superannuation rules often use the month end rather than the birthday.

Frequently asked questions

Is retirement on my birthday?
It depends on your terms. Many organisations use the last day of the month in which you attain the age, which can move the date by up to a month.
