How this is calculated

A rectangle is a multiplication. Three sides give a triangle by Heron. Four sides do not determine a shape at all, which is the fact this calculator exists to enforce: a quadrilateral with fixed sides can flex, so a diagonal is required to pin it down, and the plot then splits into two triangles measured separately. Surveyors take that diagonal for exactly this reason.

What it assumes

  • Measurements in feet, and a flat plot.

What it deliberately does not model

  • Sloping ground makes the surveyed area smaller than the measured area.
  • A registered plan or survey settles a boundary dispute, not this.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I need a diagonal for a four-sided plot?
Because four side lengths do not fix a shape. The same four sides can form a square or a flattened parallelogram with much less area, so a diagonal is needed to determine which.
