Final Grade Calculator

The score needed on a final to reach a target grade, and whether the target is still reachable. As the remaining weight shrinks the required score rises steeply, so a target that was comfortable at midterm can become arithmetically impossible.

84.67 on the final, which is 30% of the course, to finish at 80. That is within the 100 available, so the target is still reachable. You have already passed on the weighted total whatever happens in the final.

Method and background

How this is calculated

The target is the weighted combination of what is already banked and what remains. Rearranging for the unknown gives the score required, and dividing by the remaining weight is what makes it explode: with thirty percent of the course left, every point of target above the current grade needs three and a third points on the final. The page reports the best and worst possible outcomes so a reader can see the whole range still open to them rather than only the one number they asked about.

the required score rises steeply as the remaining weight shrinks, which is why late targets become unreachable

Method and limits

What it assumes

  • A single remaining assessment carrying the remaining weight.

What it deliberately does not model

  • Curved or scaled grading changes the arithmetic entirely.
  • Some courses set a minimum final score to pass regardless of the weighted total.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the score I need so high?
Because the remaining weight divides into it. With thirty percent of the course left, every point of target above your current grade needs three and a third points on the final.
Is my target still reachable?
Only if the required score is at or below the maximum. The page says when it is not, rather than returning a number above full marks.
