Method and background

How this is calculated

Minutes divide by sixty rather than a hundred. The confusion is entirely because both are written with a separator: 8:15 and 8.15 look alike and differ by six minutes of pay. Payroll systems almost always want decimal hours, and many round to the nearest quarter or tenth of an hour, which is shown here because that rounding decides whether a few minutes are paid.

minutes are sixtieths, not hundredths, which is why 8:15 is 8.25 and not 8.15

Frequently asked questions

Why is 8 hours 15 minutes not 8.15?
Because minutes are sixtieths. Fifteen minutes is a quarter of an hour, so 8.25. Writing 8.15 records nine minutes rather than fifteen.
