Flight Cost per Mile Calculator

Flight cost per kilometre and per hour, with extras included. Cost per kilometre falls sharply with distance, which is why a short hop can look expensive next to a long haul that costs three times as much.

Also called: flight cost per km, airfare value calculator.

Method and background

How this is calculated

Total paid, including bags and seat selection, over the distance flown. Long routes have a much lower cost per kilometre because the fixed costs of a departure, landing fees, ground handling and crew positioning, spread over more distance. That is why comparing two fares by their absolute price says little, and why the per-hour figure is often the more useful one when deciding whether to fly or take a train.

Method and limits

What it assumes

  • Great circle distance, which is shorter than the actual routing.

What it deliberately does not model

  • It does not value time, comfort or schedule, which usually decide the choice.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a short flight so expensive per kilometre?
Because the fixed costs of a departure are the same whatever the distance. Spreading landing fees and turnaround over 400 km rather than 4,000 makes the per-km figure ten times worse.
