Method and background

How this is calculated

A lakh is a hundred thousand and a crore is ten million, so a crore is not a round number of millions in the western scale and vice versa. The digit grouping follows the same logic: Indian grouping is 3-2-2, giving 1,00,00,000 for a crore where western grouping gives 10,000,000. Both are shown because a figure copied between the two conventions is a common source of error by a factor of ten.

the Indian system groups in twos above the first thousand, which is why the comma positions differ

Frequently asked questions

How many crore is a billion?
One hundred crore. A billion is 10^9 and a crore is 10^7, so the factor is a hundred.
Why are the commas in different places?
Indian grouping is 3-2-2 rather than 3-3-3, so after the first thousand the digits group in pairs. A crore is 1,00,00,000 in India and 10,000,000 elsewhere.
