How this is calculated

Total the weekly hours and divide by one full-time week. Anyone over full time is counted at their actual hours, which is a choice: some conventions cap each person at 1.0 FTE so overtime does not inflate the figure. Budget and grant reporting almost always want FTE rather than headcount.

Frequently asked questions

Is FTE the same as headcount?
No. Ten people at half time is ten headcount and five FTE. Capacity planning wants the second number.
