Method and background

How this is calculated

Count how many scored below you, add half of those who tied, and divide by the total. That mid-rank treatment of ties is the standard convention and stops identical scores getting different percentiles. The distinction worth stating is that a 90th percentile is not a score of 90: it means you did better than ninety percent of the group, which on a hard paper might be a raw mark of sixty.

percentile = (those below, plus half of those equal) over the total

Method and limits

What it assumes

  • The list includes your own score.

What it deliberately does not model

  • Percentiles describe this group only. The same score in a different cohort is a different percentile.
  • Several percentile definitions exist and differ slightly at the extremes.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 90th percentile a score of 90?
No. It means you beat ninety percent of the group. On a difficult exam that could be a raw mark of sixty, and on an easy one a mark of ninety could be the fiftieth percentile.
